In 11th hour negotiations, the AUC administration, custodial staff protesters and their student intermediaries have reached an agreement to bring the five-day strike to an end.

Sarah Abdel Rahman, one of the negotiating intermediaries, says that staff decided to return to work on Monday November 1.

The talks, often heated, lasted more than six hours, Abdel Rahman said.

However, some staff have expressed their disappointment and anger that the administration did not go far enough to meet their demands.

The administration has conceded one Saturday of every month to be considered a day off for staff.

An EGP 200 salary increase will be applied to staff wages effective November.

On February 15, the administration will determine the exact percentage of an increase to be paid out in March 2011.

In September 2011, the administration is expected to provide yet another wage increase.

The administration also pledged to consider a set figure for annual wage increases.

The demand that the staff cafeteria be shut down was already met last week; the administration will provide all staff with an EGP 200 subsidy instead.

A follow-up meeting between staff and administration has been scheduled for November 11.
