With Egypt's presidential elections to be held on May 23 and 24, many political groups are not in favor of the idea of a "consensus president," especially after hearing unconfirmed news that stated Secretary General of the Arab League Nabil El-Araby was running for the post.

A consensus president is one chosen by Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and agreed upon by the rest of the political powers in the parliament without democratic elections involving the masses.

A number of AUC security guards have complained of unfair pay for overtime work while protecting the university during Mohammed Mahmoud Street clashes last November.

Despite the EGP 2000 raise that 280 security guards received in recognition of their efforts, security personnel remain unsatisfied with how the basic salary and overtime were calculated given the exceptional circumstances and difficult working conditions.

During the clashes, AUC's Tahrir campus was officially closed to students and staff alike.

The calls for civil disobedience were done with "unnecessary haste" and the action should have come in stages, said writer Belal Fadl at a discussion on campus last week.

"I think that different sectors of society should have started with a strike, and then [Egyptians] would escalate their action to civil disobedience," he said.
