Although it could prove to be a living laboratory for biology students, AUC's latest man-made lake outside Gate 2 is actually a cesspool of open sewage water and is a health concern for many in the community.
"Workers from the Fifth Settlement municipality leave the water sprinklers open all day unattended which blocks the sewer and floods the side street leading to AUC gate 2," said AUC security personnel Ahmed Tantawi. The security staff mentioned that the problem has been recurring and the district administration always responded slowly to our complaints.
One out of every eight Egyptians lives in a slum, according to United Nations estimates. AUC along with the Ma'an (together), NGO is mobilizing to improve these Egyptians' lot by raising EGP 1 billion.
AUC also has an initiative in place to tackle the issue of informal housing by replacing slum housing in Cairo with sustainable communities - urbanization instead of eradication.
The initiative is discussed and critiqued in a series of lectures open for faculty, staff and students. The first session was on February 8.
