For the first time in AUC history, a Student Union President is impeached and dismissed before finishing out his mandate.

On Thursday, students voted in favor of a referendum to uphold a Student Senate decision to impeach Shafick.

The final tally on Friday revealed that 855 voted for the referendum while 689 voted against.

"Shafick and his entire team are dismissed, and we will elect a new president within 10 days," said Hatem Mashhour, a Student Judicial Board member and a witness to the vote counting.

Medhat Haroun was announced as the new AUC Provost in an e-mail that was sent to the community on December 1.

Haroun is the current dean of the School of Sciences and Engineering, and according to current Provost Lisa Anderson, he has agreed to take up the position starting January 1.

The SJB is preparing to hit the ground running and meet challenges next semester, its recently elected members said days after a run-off for the fifth and final seat was called for Mohammed Seif.

SJB-elect, Amr Abaza said that the new SJB formation will get a head start on their “learning path” by monitoring the upcoming student senate (SS) elections.

Despite decades of improved health care in de­veloping nations, the United Nations continues to feel that reducing the global rate of maternal death should be an international priority.

Speaking at the Mary Cross Hall last Wednes­day, Kiyotaka Akasaka, the UN’s under-secretary-general for Communications and Public Informa­tion, stressed that maternal mortality - the death of a woman during or after pregnancy – was a key component of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Campus Parking

The New Cairo municipality has instructed the AUC adminstration to prohibit the parking of cars on main roads around campus, and that all cars in non-parking zones will be towed or tire clamped, in ad­dition to applying fines.

This means that members of the AUC commu­nity must either park inside campus in a designated parking
