Breaking News: AUCian killed in Road 90 traffic accident
Ammar Tareq, a journalism and mass communication junior, was killed in a traffic accident on Road 90 as he drove to AUC Tuesday morning.
The accident marks the second fatal crash involving students in less than five days.
Students reacted with shock and sadness to Tareq's death.
Within a few hours of the crash, text messages were exchanged between members of the community.
A Facebook page eulogizing Tareq and announcing a student memorial service was also set up.
The service is scheduled for 1:30pm outside the Cinnabon eatery on campus.
On Friday morning, a student was involved in a massive crash on the Ring Road which left at least 12 people dead and eight severely injured.
The Friday morning crash prompted President Hosni Mubarak to call for stricter road safety measures throughout the country.
Ashraf El Fiqi, the vice-president for student affairs who narrowly escaped a fatal car crash just outside Gate 2 on September 20, has been urging the community to do more to ensure road safety.
“We do not want anyone to become a number in the statistics and AUC should, as it always did, lead such efforts in the New Cairo community to control the damage resulting from reckless driving,” he told The Caravan in a previous interview.
He said he would contact the police authorities to try to add safety and control measures on Road 90, and urged the Student Union to revive the Safety Driving Campaign from the 1990s.
