2. International Workshop: "The Middle East from Below – Dynamics of Subversion", Center for Near and Middle Eastern Studies, Marburg University, Germany, 8-10 December 2011

In observing the ongoing social upheavals in the Middle East and North Africa, the apparent absence of organized mass ideologies is remarkable. Supportive members of Nationalism and Islamism were not the driving force behind the mass protests. Instead, a new ideational orientation of actors emphasizing individual desiderata – such as freedom, human dignity, and social equity – has placed itself centrally in the midst of the new developments.

Processes of individualized opposition have been taking place under the surface in these regions for years. Intellectuals, artists, youth, women, and others have been engaged in subverting the dominant political, social, and cultural conceptions. In contrast to previous ideology-based mass movements, recent dynamics of resistance have been characterized by individual, non-hierarchical, and spontaneous actions and behavior.

How is the given terminology adequate to grasp these dynamics in the Middle East and North Africa or do we need new terms and approaches in order to be able to analytically describe these above-mentioned individualizing processes?

The workshop aims to address the issue by providing theoretical lectures and discussions, in connection with presenting empirical case studies. The workshop is a prelude to a series of workshops that will be hosted over the coming years within the framework of the Marburg University research group: Triumph of subversion? The end of mass ideologies, and new oppositional dynamics in the Middle East and North Africa.

4. Annual Conference of the  British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES): 'Revolution and Revolt: Understanding the Forms and Causes of Change',  Middle East Centre at LSE, London, 26-28 March 2012

The conference will be held in association with the European Association for Middle Eastern Studies (EURAMES) and the Asian Federation of Middle East Associations.

The unprecedented uprisings in the Middle East over the past year have drawn comparisons with a wide scope of revolts from the French Revolution to the fall of the Berlin Wall. This conference seeks to place the focus on a multi-disciplinary consideration of the local and regional sources and forces which have fuelled the uprisings, as well as the narratives of the events. In addition to an emphasis on dynamics within and interpretations of the uprisings, presenters are encouraged to reflect on what the events may mean for the study of the region.

The conference will also highlight the areas of research undertaken by the BRISMES research networks:
- Clerical Authority in Shiite Islam
- Critical Middle East Studies
- Faith, Politics and Society
- Liberation, Domination and Expression
- Resistance, Representation and Identity
And an additional sub-theme organised by LLAS Centre for languages, linguistics and area studies| with the sponsorship of the Higher Education Academy Islamic Studies Network:
Teaching and learning about Islam and Muslims in UK higher education,

As in previous BRISMES conferences, panels on topics not covered by the overall theme or the research networks maybe also be proposed. Individual papers, however, will not be accepted unless they are relevant to the overall theme, relevant to the research network sessions, or integral to a panel proposed on the topic.

Non-presenting conference participants are warmly welcomed. Deadline for panel and paper proposals: 18 November 2011. Deadline for registration: 10 February 2012

7. Five 5 Postdoctoral Fellowships for the Research Project: "Zukunftsphilologie: Revisiting the Canons of Textual Scholarship", Berlin, Academic Year 2012/13

Zukunftsphilologie is a research project that aspires to support research in marginalized and undocumented textual practices and literary cultures with the aim of integrating texts and scholarly traditions from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East as well as from Europe itself. The project takes as its point of departure the increasingly growing concern with the global significance of philology and the potential of philology to challenge exclusivist notions of the self and the canon.

The fellowships are intended primarily for scholars of the major linguistic and philological traditions from Africa, Asia and Europe (for example, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Persian, Sanskrit, Syriac, Turkish), whose research explores linguistic practices and disciplinary entanglements in intellectual and literary history, comparative linguistics, philology, religion and the history of science. Research projects focusing on intellectual debates, polemics, correspondences, and transregional encounters are especially welcome.

Fellowships start October 1, 2012, and will end on July 31, 2013. Postdoctoral fellows will receive a monthly stipend of € 2.250 plus supplements depending on their personal situation. Organisational support regarding visa, insurances, housing, etc. will be provided. Zukunftsphilologie is funded in the framework of the Forum Transregionale Studien by the federal state of Berlin.

Deadline for application 10 January 2012. Please find the complete announcement including the application procedures at: http://www.forum-transregionale-studien.de/fileadmin/pdf/zukunftsphilologie/ZP-Ausschreibung-1213.pdf
