The following list includes faculty grants only. Graduate student grants are now handled exclusively by Dr. Amr Shaarawi, Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies. Please contact Dr. Shaarawi’s office for news about the status of applications for Graduate Student Grants.

My office will process the checks for the following grants as quickly as we can, but please allow some time for this to happen, since there is a very heavy workload for my assistant (Nancy Wadie) once the grant decisions are made. If you have not yet provided a letter of acceptance from the conference for which you have received a grant, no check will be issued until we receive such a letter.

If you see any typographical or other errors, or if you believe yourself to be wrongly missing from this list, please contact me immediately at gharman@aucegypt.edu.

Islam Azzam & Khaled Samaha

April 29th, 2012

Islam Azzam, Associate Professor in the Department of Management and Khaled Samaha, Assistant professor in the Department of Accounting, will be presenting a co-authored paper at the Annual conference of the European Accounting Association (EAA) in Ljubljana Slovenia. The conference will be haled from May 9-11, 2012. The paper is entitled “Disclosure, Corporate Governance and Cost of Equity Capital in Emerging Markets: Evidence from the Egyptian Stock Exchange.” Along with Islam and Khaled, the third co-author is Hichem Khlif of the University of Sfax in Tunis.

Khaled Samaha describes the conference as follows: “The EAA is a major event that takes place in a different European country each year. This conference is considered the second most important conference in the Accounting field after the American Accounting Association Conference (AAA). The purpose of the congress is to advance accounting knowledge. The EAA aims to link Europe to the outside community of accounting scholars and researchers, to provide a platform for the wider dissemination of European accounting research, and to foster and improve research. Since its establishment in 1977, the EAA has had a major impact on the accounting research community throughout and outside Europe. The EAA has established a secure and developing series of networks that bring together all accounting researchers from all over the world. The EAA Annual Congress offers a unique opportunity for presenting research and finding out what colleagues in the field of accounting are doing. Every year over 1100 delegates attend this popular event and close to 700 papers are presented in parallel sessions and research forums. In addition, the EAA Annual Congress provides a friendly and sociable context in which to meet colleagues from other countries, to formulate joint research projects, and generally to keep in touch with European trends in education and research.”

Khaled Dahawy (Professor of Accounting) and Khaled Samaha (Assistant Professor of Accounting) are among the co-authors of Fundamental Accounting Principles, a textbook of financial accounting. The book is 1,204 pages long and is published by McGraw-Hill. The webpage for the book can be viewed by clicking HERE.

Beginning with the September 2010 application cycle for AUC internal faculty grants, we are posting the names of all faculty grant recipients here on the Faculty Bulletin (and, in the case of all grants other than Conference Grants, the topic of the project). There are two reasons for doing so:

1. To accelerate the notification process.  Please note that recipients still need to wait several days for the official letter from my Office to know the amount received. Acceptance does not entail that the full amount requested was in fact awarded. (For now, we have decided not to list the exact dollar amount of the grants in the Bulletin.)

2. To enhance mutual awareness of AUC faculty research. It is enjoyable to read through the list and learn about the many interesting research projects in which your colleagues are involved.

Some of the Conference Grants are pending a letter of acceptance for the presentations. For this reason, only the conference locations are listed so as not to “jump the gun” with conference titles before some of the presentations are officially accepted.

If you are not on the list below and think there is an error, you may contact the Associate Provost for Research Administration (gharman@aucegypt.edu) for an explanation.

Names of recipients are listed alphabetically by family name.

Please note: this is the last cycle of AUC faculty support grants to be awarded under the old system. Beginning with the November application cycle, new application forms are required and the new rules apply. Please see the following website for details:

http://www.aucegypt.edu/research/grants/Pages/Fac.aspx

(FOLLOW-UP: if your name is spelled incorrectly on this list, or if you see any other error in the information, please contact me immediately at gharman@aucegypt.edu; it is very easy to make changes on the Bulletin and you won't be troubling me at all. We want to get everything right.)
