May 22nd, 2012
The following list includes faculty grants only. Graduate student grants are now handled exclusively by Dr. Amr Shaarawi, Dean of Graduate Studies. Please contact Dr. Shaarawi’s office for news about the status of applications for Graduate Student Grants.
My office will process the checks for the following grants as quickly as we can, but please allow some time for this to happen, since there is a very heavy workload for my assistant (Nancy Wadie) once the grant decisions are made. If you have not yet provided a letter of acceptance from the conference for which you have received a grant, no check will be issued until we receive such a letter.

Doctoral Grants at the Graduate School of North American Studies
The Graduate School of the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies invites applications for the academic year 2012/2013. The doctoral program is interdisciplinary in its approach and focuses on social transformations impacting the United States and Canada at the beginning of the 21st century. Emphases are placed on domestic and foreign policy, economic development, ethnic identity and relations, as well as recent transformations in media, art, culture, and religion. Applicants interested in pursuing a doctorate with a focus on North American Studies must have completed a degree (M.A. or equivalent) with above average marks in one of the following disciplines: American Cultural Studies, American Literature, History, Political Science, Sociology, Economics. Scholarships amount to ca. 1.500 €. It is also possible to apply for admission to the program independently from applying for a stipend. All application materials (completed application form, statement of purpose of 3 pages, outline of the dissertation project of 8 – 10 pages, curriculum vitae, two recent letters of reference, copies of earned degrees, proof of language skills, and writing sample) must be received by January 31, 2012. For more information, please visit: http://www.jfki.fu-berlin.de/
The Center for Areas Studies announces two new funding lines for Postdoctoral research
The Center for Area Studies (CAS) at Freie Universität Berlin (FU) is pleased to announce that it is launching a pilot project to promote early career researchers (postdoctoral) in the area studies. The pilot project aims at supporting early career researchers in the period between completing their PhD research and developing a grant proposal for their individual postdoctoral projects. Thus the Center for Area Studies invites applications for short-term grants (6-9 months) for postdoctoral research projects in the Area studies: 1. seed money & 2. grants on pivotal themes in the area studies. Deadline for applications is November 7, 2011. A second call will be announced in January 2012. More information shall soon be available on the CAS website ->
Ten postdoctoral fellowships for the research project Europe in the Middle East – the Middle East in Europe
The Berlin-based Forum Transregionale Studien invites scholars to apply for ten postdoctoral fellowships for the research project Europe in the Middle East—The Middle East in Europe (EUME). EUME seeks to rethink key concepts and premises that link and divide Europe and the Middle East. The project draws on the international expertise of scholars in and outside of Germany and is embedded in university and extra-university research institutions in Berlin. It supports historical-critical philology, rigorous engagement with the literatures of the Middle East and their histories, the social history of cities and the study of Middle Eastern political and philosophical thought (Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and secular) as central fields of research not only for area or cultural studies, but also for European intellectual history and other academic disciplines. The program explores modernity as a historical space and conceptual frame. Applicants should be at the postdoctoral level and should have obtained their doctorate within the last seven years. Applications should be received by 10 January 2012. Read more ->
DAAD Call for Projects: Cooperating with Egypt and Tunisia in transformation
As a response to the transformation processes in Egypt and Tunisia the German Academic Exchange Service with funds from the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs will support in Egypt and Tunisia a wide array of measures that are intended to strengthen the higher education sectors in the target countries. Essential aspects of the project include, for one thing, the role university teaching and research has played in shoring up civil-societal structures and the process of transformation; for another thing, fostering the two countries’ capabilities in science and technology. The program comprises two funding lines:
- Partnerships for transformation with universities in Egypt and Tunisia: Deadline for Applications is 30 November 2011.
- Short and medium-term cooperation measures with universities in Egypt and Tunisia (this is a continuous call, but applications should be handed in at least three months before the start of the project).
Both calls are open to all disciplines, but applications in the humanities and social sciences will be given priority (Political Sciences and Law, International Relations, History and Cultural Studies). See the Call (in German) ->

recipients of Faculty Support Grants for the September cycle
October 18th, 2011
Dear Colleagues:
What follows is a list of all Faculty Support Grants approved from the September application cycle. (Graduate Student Grants are now handled by Dr. Amr Shaarawi, Dean of Graduate Studies; inquiries can be made with his office.) All unsuccessful applicants have already been informed by email. If you think you have been wrongly omitted from the list, or if there is a typographical or other error in your listing, please let me know at gharman@aucegypt.edu. Such mistakes are easy to fix. Please note that under the new travel policy, my office will initially only be processing checks for the non-travel portion of your grant. As for the travel portion, you can either (a) book your tickets through the AUC Travel Office, or (b) book them yourself. The procedures for the two cases are as follows:
(a) The Travel Office will receive a list from me of everyone approved for travel for this cycle, including the destination and approximate dates. Since not everyone will choose to use the Travel Office, they will not automatically book your tickets for you; you must contact them to make this request, but please wait until at least Sunday, October 23 before doing so. Once the Travel Office tells us that you are booking through them, we will then pay the cost. Naturally, this amount will count against your annual maximum (which is $3,500 for Conference Grants and $6,500 for Research Grants).
(b) If you choose to book the tickets yourself, you must be reimbursed after travel is complete, after presenting your boarding passes for the whole of the trip. Please note that the amount of reimbursement will be determined by the Travel Office. If for some reason you need a more complicated itinerary than direct travel to the research/conference site, you are allowed to book such an itinerary, but of course you will only be reimbursed for what the fair price would have been for a direct route. Naturally, this amount will count against your annual maximum.
Important Note: faculty are not allowed more than the maximum amount in each grant category for any reason. If for example the airfare and per diem for a distant conference add up to more than $3,500, you may be left with some out-of-pocket expenses. Faculty are encouraged to consider this point when deciding on which conferences to attend during any given academic year.
Another Important Note (October 19): We do not process Conference Grants for which the letter of acceptance is still pending until the letter of acceptance is forwarded to my office.
Dr. Graham Harman, Associate Provost for Research Administration

summer opportunity at Syracuse for junior faculty and graduate students
September 28th, 2011
This is forwarded to the Bulletin by Dr. Holger Albrecht, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science.
The 2012 Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research will be held at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. Participants at the 2012 institute will arrive on Sunday June 17, and classes will commence on June 18. The institute will run until the evening of Friday June 29, with a two day break on June 23 and 24.
The institute seeks to enable students to create and critique methodologically sophisticated qualitative research designs, including case studies, tests of necessity or sufficiency, and narrative or interpretive work. It explores the techniques, uses, strengths, and limitations of these methods, while emphasizing their relationships with alternative approaches. Topics include research design, methods of structured and focused comparisons of cases, typological theory, case selection, process tracing, comparative historical analysis, congruence testing, path dependency, interpretivism, counterfactual analysis, interview and field research (including archival) techniques, necessary and sufficient conditions, fuzzy set methods, natural experiments, and philosophy of science issues relevant to qualitative research.
Attendees will receive constructive feedback on their own research designs.
Materials from the 2011 institute (including a schedule and reading list) are available for viewing at http://www1.maxwell.syr.edu/
There are two ways to attend the institute – by nomination from a member department or research center, or by successfully competing in the open pool competition.
CQRM members will use their own meritocratic criteria to select students, fellows or junior faculty to attend the 2012 institute, and must notify CQRM of their choices by February 17, 2012. CQRM has approximately 70 members that make nominations each year. If you do not know if your institution is a member, you can email celman@maxwell.syr.edu to request that information.
Students, fellows and junior faculty who are not sure if they will be selected, or who attend non-member organizations, should apply directly to CQRM, using the form available at this link:
https://survey.maxwell.syr.
Instructions for submission are on the first page of the form.
Open pool applications to the institute must be received by November 18, 2011. Applicants will be notified of the outcome by December 16, 2011. CQRM will cover the costs of tuition, lodging, and meals for successful applicants. Attendees will be responsible for their own transportation costs to and from Syracuse University.
