The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at the American University in Cairo held its 41st training workshop for African journalists on May 29, 2013, a tradition that started in 1992. This bi-annual workshop falls under the framework of the Union of African Journalists’ (UAJ) role to train new African cadres in the field of journalism for the benefit of all the African countries. Participants included journalists from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Bostwana, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Ghana, South Sudan, Lesotho, Malawi, Morocco Mauritius, Congo-Brazzaville, Angola, Djibouti, Rwanda, Guinee, Mali, Mauritanie, and the Niger. The JRMC faculty participating in the workshop were Hussein Amin, Mervat Abou Oaf, Mohamed ElMasry, Kim Fox, Rasha Allam, and Rasha Kamhawi. Presentations were made on topics highly relevant to participants, such as “Media Management in the Digital Era: Challenges and Opportunities,” “Media Law and Policy,” “Social Media for Journalists,” “Print Media Research for Journalists,” “Introduction to the Sociology of News,” and “Ethics of New Media.” A group lunch provided participants and faculty with opportunities for networking and further discussion.

On Wednesday December 12, 2012, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication organized the Forty (40) training workshop for the African Journalists with the African Journalists Union. This is a JRMC tradition that started back in 1992 under the supervision of Professor Hussein Amin and continues today. The department of Journalism and Mass Communication organized the 39th training workshop for African journalists in association with the Union of African Journalists (U.A.J.) on May 16, 2012. This workshop is an annual event started by Dr. Hussein Amin in 1992 and continuing under his supervision for twenty years. The workshop has contributed to the creation of a comprehensive network of African journalists who have been trained at the department of Journalism and Mass Communication, School of Global Affairs and Public Policies and work throughout African media organizations. The journalists attending this workshop came from Algeria, Angola, Eritrea, Central Africa, Morocco, Democratic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Djibouti, Mauritania, Senegal, South Sudan, and Uganda.

In addition to looking for your own grant on the list below, please take a few minutes to read through some of the other interesting research topics and conference trips of your AUC colleagues. Enhancing mutual recognition of faculty research is one of the motivations for listing successful grant applicants here in the Bulletin.
If you see any mistaken information in the list, including minor spelling errors in any names, please contact me immediately at gharman@aucegypt.edu. We aspire to have a completely accurate list for each grant cycle.
Official letters of approval will be sent to everyone shortly. However, please note the following two points:
1. My assistant, Nancy, has been asked to help organize the March 31 Commencement Ceremony, and this needs to be her top priority at the moment. This could lead to delays of several days in processing your grant letters.
2. At the request of the Payroll Office, we will no longer be sending approval letters for Conference Grants that have been approved “pending acceptance of paper.” The new policy is that we need to see your acceptance letter from the conference before issuing the approval letter, or at least see your name on the official conference schedule.

Dr. Hussein Amin, Professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, was appointed member of the Higher Committee for Media Ethics that deals with issues such as inaccuracy, privacy, misrepresentation and harassment in Egyptian broadcast media. The Committee was set to develop ethical Code of Practice, ensure the duty of the broadcast (Radio and Television) channels/networks, and maintain the highest professional and ethical standards.
Dr. Amin was also selected as member of the National Media Monitoring Committee during the Parliamentary Elections and the Presidential Elections 2010-2011. The committee's task is to develop a Code of Conduct for the broadcast media, as well as its criteria during the period of campaigning for the parliamentary and the presidential candidates and to ensure competence and impartiality of the Egyptian broadcast media.
On May 13, Dr. Amin organized the 35th African Journalists' Workshop in the department of Journalism and Mass Communication. Journalists who participated in the workshop came from Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Ghana, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.
On Tuesday May 18, Dr. Amin was an invited speaker on the Future of Egyptian Radio. The symposium took place at ERTU headquarters and attended by hundreds of Radio broadcasting officials and professionals on the 75th anniversary of the Egyptian Radio.

Dr. Hussein Amin, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, was a keynote speaker at the recent Pan-Africa Media Conference. The conference was held at Kenyatta International Conference Center (K.I.C.C.), in Nairobi, Kenya on March 18-19. Dr. Amin’s talk was entitled "The Making of the Journalist and Journalism of the Next Decade." The conference was dedicated to discussing robust policies related to the operation and development of media in Africa.
