Allow me to begin by thanking all AUC faculty for their patience during the current grant cycle. Following our announced two-week delay due to the September strike, there was another, unexpected delay as the Associate Provost for Research Administration was trapped in New York by Hurricane Sandy.

As always, the following list includes faculty grants only. Graduate student grants are now handled exclusively by Dr. Amr Shaarawi, Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies. Please contact Dr. Shaarawi’s office for news about the status of applications for Graduate Student Grants.

My office will process the checks for the following grants as quickly as we can, but please allow some time for this to happen, since there is a very heavy workload for my assistant (Nancy Wadie) once the grant decisions are made. Hassan Azzazy, Professor of Chemistry, recently presented a lecture on “Innovation Conducive Environment: A Case Study in Biomedicine” during the TWAS/BVA.NXT 2012 conference on “Scientific Innovation in the Developing World: From Theory to Practice,” held in April. The conference was organized by the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), Trieste, Italy.

Hassan also presented two lectures during the BioVision Alexandria 2012 conference on “New Life Sciences: Linking Science to Society” organized by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in April. One of the lectures was part of the session on the Atlas of Islamic Science and Innovation and entitled “Biomedical Innovation and Entrepreneurship: The Case of Novel Diagnostics & Therapeutics.” The title of the second lecture was “Gold Nanoparticles: A Versatile Platform for Sensitive Biosensing.”

In May, Hassan was also invited by the Egyptian Japanese University for Science & Technology (E-JUST) to participate in a symposium on “Frontiers on Tissue Engineering, Scaffold, Drug Delivery Systems, and Stem Cell Technology.” He presented a keynote lecture on “Targeted Drug and Protein Delivery Using Smart Nanocarriers.”

Dr. Hassan Azzazy, professor of Chemistry and leader of Novel Diagnostics and Therapeutics Research group, has been invited to present a lecture on “Direct Detection of Pathogens Using Nanogold Assays” during the Licensing Opportunity Forum and Patent Workshop that was held in Sharjah, UAE (Nov 28-29, 2011). During the forum, Dr. Azzazy (leader of the NanoDiagX team) was honored by the President of Arab Science & Technology Foundation (ASTF) for winning the Third Prize in the Intel Global Challenge that was held in UC Berkeley, USA (Nov 7-10, 2011).

Dr. Azzazy was invited to present a lecture on “Nanodiagnostic Assays for in Vitro Detection of Cancer” during the Annual Meeting of the Middle-Eastern Association for Cancer Research (MEACR) titled “Cancer Research from Bench to Clinic” that was jointly organized by the Schools of Medicine and Science, Tanta University (Dec 27-28, 2011).

Dr. Azzazy was also invited to present a lecture on “Egyptian Tech-Preneurs Win Regional and Global Competitions” during the workshop on “Knowledge-Based Economy and Science Parks In Egypt” that was organized by the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (Jan 16-18, 2012).

AUC features prominently in a July 15 article in Science magazine entitled "A New Day for Egyptian Science?", by Andrew Lawler. Hassan Azzazy, Professor of Chemistry and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research in the School of Sciences and Engineering (SSE), has been honored with Egypt's National Excellence Prize in Advanced Technological Studies. The research team led by Hassan Azzazy, Professor of Chemistry and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research in the School of Sciences and Engineering (SSE), is cited multiple times in an article in the June 9, 2011 issue of the prestigious journal Nature for their diagnostic work with gold nanoparticles.
